New ancillary accommodation to an Arts & Crafts house

Our approach to the Coach House was influenced by the character and craftsmanship of the original Arts and Crafts country house, which itself, draws upon the Sussex vernacular. The new Coach House occupies and extends an existing structure, with a glazed link connecting it to the main house.

The design is rooted in the proportions, materials and craftsmanship of the existing house.

Principles of the Arts and Crafts movement inform both the architecture and the interiors of the property. Details such as the bespoke stone and brickwork, inspired by Standen House, sit alongside traditional roof detailing and carefully crafted joinery. The impact of this provides the new structure with a strong sense of harmony and continuity with the original house.

The interiors compliment and continue this language.

Through the use of natural materials, considered detailing, and spaces designed around contemporary family life, harmony is achieved. As well as adhering to the principles of the past, our design is firmly rooted in the present. The coach house is highly insulated and thermally efficient, meeting all current regulations and requirements.

This has created a more open and flowing internal circulation without sacrificing any of the original character.

The result is a carefully crafted addition that provides flexible ancillary accommodation for the main house, while establishing its own architectural character and strengthening the relationship between the house, garden and landscape.
