The English Country House was conceived where architecture, craftsmanship, light, landscape and everyday life were considered together. We draw on this tradition to create homes that feel naturally rooted in their setting, with a sense of permanence that allows them to evolve with the lives within them.
Our Approach
At Sommerer Architecture & Living, we begin with an understanding of the house as it is — its history, architecture, materials, landscape and the way it has evolved over time — before considering what might be restored, altered or added. Drawing on the traditions of the English country house, Vernacular Architecture and the Arts & Crafts, we seek to make thoughtful interventions that respect what is already there while allowing the house to work naturally for contemporary family life
Studio
Sommerer Architecture & Living was founded by Luisa, who trained at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, where her interest in the Arts and Crafts tradition first developed. She has since worked on Arts and Crafts houses across Sussex and Surrey, initially with leading practices specialising in historic and country houses, and now through her own practice. This experience has shaped a particular interest in understanding how the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement can continue to inform the life of a house today.
